Why You Need a US Bank Account

A US bank account is not optional — it is the entire reason most non-residents form a US LLC. Without one, your LLC cannot:

  • Accept Stripe payments — Stripe requires a US bank account for payouts
  • Accept PayPal Business payments in USD
  • Receive wire transfers from US clients
  • Pay US vendors and services
  • Build US credit history for your business

The sequence is always: LLC first, EIN second, bank account third, payment processor fourth. You cannot skip steps.

Banks That Accept Non-Residents: Comparison

Traditional banks (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo) generally require an in-person visit to a US branch, making them impractical for non-residents. Neobanks are the solution — they offer remote account opening with varying levels of non-resident friendliness.

Mercury: The Popular Choice

Mercury

Website: mercury.comFee: $0/monthApproval: 1-5 days

Mercury is the most popular banking choice for non-resident LLC owners, particularly those in tech, SaaS, and e-commerce. It offers a clean interface, powerful API integrations, and features designed for startups.

Pros:

  • No monthly fees, no minimum balance
  • US routing and account numbers for ACH and wire transfers
  • Physical and virtual debit cards
  • Treasury product for earning yield on idle funds
  • Integrations with Stripe, QuickBooks, Xero, and more
  • Clean, modern dashboard

Cons:

  • Does not accept registered agent addresses as business addresses — this is the single biggest issue for non-residents
  • Can be slow to approve applications from certain countries
  • Customer support is email-only (no phone)

Mercury rejects registered agent addresses

This is the most common reason non-residents are rejected by Mercury. If your LLC's address is the same as your registered agent's address (e.g., a Registered Agents Inc. or Northwest address), Mercury will decline your application. You need a separate virtual office address. See the virtual office section below.

Relay: The Reliable Alternative

Relay

Website: relayfi.comFee: $0/monthApproval: 1-3 days

Relay is less well-known than Mercury but has strong approval rates for non-residents. It is particularly good for service-based businesses and freelancers.

Pros:

  • No monthly fees, no minimum balance
  • Good approval rates for non-residents
  • Multiple checking accounts (up to 20) for organizing finances
  • US routing and account numbers
  • Physical debit cards
  • More lenient on business address requirements than Mercury

Cons:

  • Fewer integrations than Mercury
  • No treasury/yield product
  • Less known in the startup ecosystem

Wise Business: The Easy Option

Wise Business

Website: wise.com/businessFee: $0/monthApproval: 1-2 days

Wise Business (formerly TransferWise) is the easiest option for non-residents to get approved. It provides US account details through a partner bank and excels at international transfers.

Pros:

  • Highest approval rate for non-residents
  • US account details (routing + account number) for receiving payments
  • Best international transfer rates (real mid-market exchange rate)
  • Multi-currency accounts (hold 40+ currencies)
  • Debit card for spending
  • Accepts registered agent addresses in most cases

Cons:

  • US account details are through a partner bank, not a direct banking relationship
  • Cannot write checks
  • Limited integration ecosystem compared to Mercury
  • Not perceived as a "real" US bank by some vendors

Strategy: open both Wise and Mercury

Many non-residents open a Wise Business account first (easiest approval) to start operating immediately, then apply for Mercury once they have a virtual office address and some business activity to show. There is no rule against having multiple US business bank accounts.

Documents You Need

Regardless of which bank you choose, have these documents ready before applying:

  1. Articles of Organization — your LLC formation certificate from the Secretary of State. This proves your LLC legally exists.
  2. EIN confirmation letter — the CP 575 letter from the IRS, or at minimum the EIN number with your LLC name. Some banks accept the SS-4 confirmation if the CP 575 has not arrived yet.
  3. Operating Agreement — the internal governance document for your LLC. It shows ownership structure. Single-member LLCs need this even though they have only one member.
  4. Valid passport — for identity verification. Must be current (not expired).
  5. Proof of business address — for Mercury, this must be a virtual office address, not a registered agent address. For Relay and Wise, requirements are less strict.
  6. Business description — a brief explanation of what your LLC does, who your customers are, and how you generate revenue. Banks use this for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance.

The Virtual Office Requirement

A virtual office gives your LLC a real commercial address (not a PO Box, not a registered agent address). This is necessary for Mercury and recommended for all banks.

What a virtual office provides

  • A real street address you can use as your LLC business address
  • Mail scanning and forwarding services
  • A legitimate address that passes bank verification

Recommended providers

  • iPostal1 — from $10/month. Wide network of US addresses.
  • Anytime Mailbox — from $15/month. Good mail scanning features.
  • Regus / Spaces — from $30/month. Premium commercial addresses.

Choose an address in your LLC's state of formation if possible, though this is not strictly required. A Wyoming LLC can have a virtual office in New York.

Do this before applying to Mercury

Set up your virtual office address and update your LLC's mailing address with the Secretary of State (if applicable) before submitting your Mercury application. Mercury verifies that your business address is not a known registered agent address.

Common Rejections and How to Fix Them

1. Registered agent address used as business address

Fix: Get a virtual office address ($10-30/month) and reapply. This is the number one reason for Mercury rejections.

2. High-risk business category

Fix: If your business involves cryptocurrency, adult content, gambling, or firearms, most neobanks will decline. You may need a specialized high-risk merchant bank. For borderline cases, provide a detailed business description emphasizing the legitimate aspects of your business.

3. Incomplete documentation

Fix: Make sure your Articles of Organization, EIN letter, Operating Agreement, and passport are all uploaded clearly. Blurry photos or missing pages cause rejections. Upload high-resolution scans, not phone photos.

4. Country of residence restrictions

Fix: Some banks restrict applications from countries under OFAC sanctions (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, etc.). For non-sanctioned countries that still get flagged (sometimes Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria), try a different bank. Wise has the broadest country acceptance.

5. Vague business description

Fix: "Online business" or "consulting" is too vague. Be specific: "I provide web design services to small businesses in the United States and United Kingdom. Clients pay via bank transfer or credit card. Average transaction is $2,000-5,000." Specific descriptions pass KYC more easily.

6. Mismatched information

Fix: Your name on the bank application must match your passport exactly. Your LLC name must match the Articles of Organization exactly. Your EIN must match the LLC name. Any inconsistency triggers manual review or rejection.

After Banking: Stripe, PayPal, and Beyond

Once your US bank account is open, you can connect payment processors:

Stripe

Sign up at stripe.com using your LLC name, EIN, and US bank account details. Stripe will verify your bank account with two micro-deposits (takes 1-2 business days). Once verified, you can accept credit card payments from anywhere in the world through your US Stripe account.

PayPal Business

Create a PayPal Business account using your LLC's EIN and US bank account. PayPal may ask for additional verification documents. Once approved, you can receive payments in USD and access PayPal's full feature set.

Other payment processors

With a US LLC, EIN, and bank account, you can also sign up for: Square, Braintree, Authorize.net, Shopify Payments, and most other US-based payment processors that may not be available in your home country.

Important note on Stripe

Stripe's terms of service require that you have a genuine business with actual customers. Creating a US LLC solely to resell Stripe access to others, or to process payments for businesses that Stripe has declined, violates their terms and will result in account termination.
